The indispensability of weapon protection training for weapon carriers!

Police officers are often confronted with dangerous situations in which their service weapons are not only a means of defense but also a potential target for criminals. In view of the growing willingness to use violence and the increasing number of incidents in which police weapons are taken, the importance of comprehensive weapon protection training is becoming ever clearer.

The reality of the threat

According to a study by the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR), more than 50 police officers in the USA were killed with their own weapons between 2010 and 2020 after these had been snatched from them. This figure underlines the urgent need to train officers better in the protection of their weapons.

A report by the “European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Training” (CEPOL) shows that the threat of disarm attempts is also rising in Europe. Between 2015 and 2020, there were more than 30 documented cases in which police weapons were taken and which in some cases led to fatal exchanges of fire.

Arguments for the importance of weapon protection training

1. Increasing safety for officers and the public

  • Avoiding disarm incidents:  Good weapon protection training helps officers learn techniques that prevent their service weapons from being taken.
  • Safe weapon handling:  Officers who are trained in the safe handling of their weapons minimize the risk of accidents or malfunctions.

2.  Raising awareness of the possibility and the danger

  • Recognizing risks:  Training makes officers aware of the dangers associated with carrying a service weapon. They learn that their weapons can be a target in certain situations, and they remain alert.
  • Psychological preparation:  The awareness that their weapon can be at risk at any time helps officers prepare mentally for potential threats and remain calm in stressful situations.

3.  Integrating the techniques learned into existing procedures and techniques

  • Seamless integration:  Weapon protection training is designed so that the techniques learned can be seamlessly integrated into existing operational procedures.
  • Regular practice and repetition:  Regular exercises ensure that officers internalize the techniques and can apply them automatically.
  • Ongoing adaptation:  Training is continuously adapted to new threats and developments to ensure that officers are always up to date.

Practical examples from the USA

Here are some examples of incidents in the USA that underline the need for weapon protection training:

  • May 2024, Paris: A man under arrest got hold of a service weapon at a police station in Paris and used it to inflict life-threatening injuries on two police officers in Paris.
  • July 2016, Baton Rouge, Louisiana:  A perpetrator took a police officer’s service weapon and killed three police officers. This incident shows the fatal consequences of inadequate protection.
  • Gelsenkirchen 2017: During a raid, an officer of the SEK (German police special operations unit) was shot dead. The perpetrator was able to take a police officer’s weapon and fire it.
  • Vienna, June 2020: A 54-year-old man took a service weapon during a police operation and fired several shots.
  • Graz, March 2023: An inmate at Graz prison (Justizanstalt Graz) took the service weapon of a prison officer (Justizwache) and injured two inmates before taking his own life.

Conclusion

The figures and facts speak for themselves: weapon protection training is indispensable for the safety of police officers and the public. It not only helps to prevent disarm attempts but also prepares officers mentally and physically for possible threats. The seamless integration of the techniques learned into existing procedures ensures that officers can act calmly, in a controlled manner and effectively in every situation.

Investing in regular and comprehensive weapon protection training is not only a question of safety but also of professionalism and responsibility toward the community. It is time for police authorities worldwide to prioritize this important aspect of training and to continuously develop it further.
